A little extra boost to get you through winter
The winter months… they can sometimes feel really long. Cold weather, less sunshine, and on top of that, all kinds of viruses going around. Especially in those final weeks before spring arrives, I like to give my body a little extra pick-me-up. Nothing complicated – just something pure and natural. This beetroot boost drink is one of those little helpers that truly makes me happy.
Why beetroot?
Beetroots are real powerhouses. They naturally contain nitrates, which help support healthy blood circulation in your body. This can contribute to more energy and an overall fitter feeling. It's no coincidence that beetroot is popular among athletes, but it's also ideal for everyday life when you want to give your body some extra support.
The warming combination of ginger and turmeric
In this drink, I use both ginger and turmeric. Ginger provides a lovely spicy kick and supports digestion. Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and gives your body a warm feeling from the inside out. Together, they form a wonderful, powerful base – especially on cold days.
Extra vitamins from fruits and vegetables
To bring the drink into a nice balance, I also add some other ingredients. Carrot provides natural sweetness and contains beta-carotene (vitamin A). A small splash of orange or mandarin juice adds not only a fresh flavour but also an extra vitamin C boost. Finally, I use lemon and lime; they make the drink refreshing and help with the absorption of vitamins and minerals.
A spicy bite from black pepper
What really completes this drink for me is a small pinch of freshly ground black pepper. It adds a delicious spicy bite together with the ginger. But black pepper does even more: it contains piperine, a compound that can support the absorption of nutrients – such as those from turmeric – in your stomach and intestines. A small detail, but it makes the drink just that little bit more powerful.
How I make it myself
I always make this drink in my Urban Max. It's quick and easy and gives a beautifully smooth result.
- 2 medium-sized beetroots
- 1 apple
- 1 carrot
- 10 grams of fresh ginger (about ½–1 cm)
- 10 grams of fresh turmeric
- ½ lemon
- ½ lime
- ± 50 ml orange or mandarin juice
- Water to top up
- A small pinch of freshly ground black pepper
Everything goes into the Urban Max together, and if it's a bit too much I do it in two batches – blend well, top up with water to the desired consistency if needed, and done. The result is a fresh, earthy, slightly sweet drink with a lovely spicy kick.
Not a miracle cure, but a delicious and nutritious little moment for yourself. Just the right boost to get you through those last few weeks of winter.
